Activity Description

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States and a primary cause of cervical, oropharyngeal, and anogenital cancers. An estimated 14 million new cases are diagnosed annually in the US, with most new infections occurring in teens and young adults. HPV-related, noncervical cancers are on the rise in the United States, especially in males. Although safe and effective HPV vaccines are available to protect against infection and subsequent disease, vaccination rates remain suboptimal. In this interactive educational program, experts will consider the burden and stigma associated with HPV, provide guidance on identifying key candidates for vaccination, and discuss counseling and communication strategies to improve vaccine uptake. Faculty will also review the recommended vaccination schedules and HPV vaccine efficacy data.

Target Audience

The intended audience for this activity is pediatricians, family medicine physicians, pediatric nurse practitioners, pediatric nurses, and other health care professionals involved in the management of patients at risk for human papilloma virus (HPV) infection.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Discuss the burden and stigma typically associated with HPV.
  • Identify appropriate pediatric candidates for HPV vaccination.
  • Implement appropriate counseling and communication strategies to caregivers of pediatric patients to improve HPV vaccine uptake.
