I’ve been told all my life that basically, GPA defines my future and if it is low – I won’t find a job etc etc and end up homeless. I am not stupid, I really believe that I have a big future, but my gpa is not too good, no matter what I do, it is still pretty low. Do you think it’s true that gpa is extra important?

I don’t think it matters that much; I’ve had a GPA of 4 and got a job, other applicants have had GPA 5+. I think it matters only if you have no previous experience and like just out of school
GPA is by far the most important part of your application. A bad SAT score can be made up by your GPA, but a bad GPA can not be made up for with a good SAT score. Since it’s different across schools due to various factors (grade deflation/inflation, bad teachers, etc.), universities will take this into account when looking at your application, but regardless, it is weighted the most in holistic admissions for US universities. Remember, you are going to college to be primarily a student, so that is what they would obviously look at. Ofc your profile (essays, ec’s, etc.) matters, but your GPA is the single most vital component to your application.
So still, your knowledge is more important than gpa because you were hired based on your knowledge which you implemented into the test task. No matter your gpa, experience or anything else, if you don’t have knowledge on the subject – no one will hire you
