The similarities between a five-paragraph essay and an article are quite numerous but for the reason of this discussion only those concerned will be selected and discussed. An article is a mostly non-fiction work about current events in society. It has various sizes and is usually for newspaper, magazine, journals or reference books.
A five paragraph essay is an essay that has all the ideas written and organized into five paragraphs. The essay is usually prose and can be descriptive, argumentative, expository, imaginative or analytical, and usually from a personal point of view. The similarities between writing a five-paragraph essay and an article are that first an article contains paragraphs and an article can be five-paragraphed. This simply means that both types of writing have their ideas developed successively in paragraphs after a logical sense of development of the idea and topic of discussion.
Another similarity is that both types of writing do not have an address of the writer and of the person to whom one is writing, in the case of an article. Because an article is for publication, it is usually assumed to bear the address of the writer and the publisher, but this is only obtainable by letters. The same goes for an essay. Essays are primarily for students and for academic purposes; no address of the writer is required.
In addition to that, there are no greetings in both kinds of works. There is no need for “dear sir or ma” in a five-paragraph essay or in an article. The same goes for a free conclusion. That is why the need for “your faithful” is eliminated in both kinds of works.
Both types of writing could have the same nature depending on the topic of discussion. That is, both could be as descriptive, narrative, explanatory as the case may be. An article and a five-paragraph essay would have information to offer the reader, and could criticize an issue or try to persuade the reader with ideas about a particular issue.
